South Korea Hotels and Holidays
Jutting its stubborn chin skywards, South Korea is a country bathed in green. South Koreans are known for their love of the outdoors- particularly the mountains. The country is pleasant enough to visit any time of the year yet you are best advised to stay away during the hot months – between May to August when the weather becomes quite unbearably muggy and typhoon-prone.
It is also more crowded, for some reason, with accommodation prices sky-rocketing.While in the country, don’t forget to visit the most exquisite Buddhist temples you will ever come across in the world. Buddhism came to South Korea sometime during the fourth century from India.
The advent of the religion in the country has inspired some beautiful instances of temple architecture chief among which are Sokkuram Grotto and Bulguk-sa which, along with a compilation of more than 80, 000 woodblocks pertaining to Buddhist scripture called Tripataka Koreana have made it to the World Cultural Heritage list of the UNESCO.
For the outdoor types, the bracing air of the mountains and the rich diversity of flora and fauna is a major draw. If you happen to be a happy mix of the spiritual and the extrovert, then the Palgong-san Provincial Park may just be the place for you. The view is drop dead gorgeous and while there, you may hear many locals tell you about the spirit in residence at Palgong-san which will eventually re-unite the two Koreas.
While touring around South Korea you must also stop over at the various marine parks along the coastline and enjoy the exotic views truly unique to the country. But what if you are only a party animal? A confirmed night-owl? There are some real fun spots you can go to. While most bars and restaurants are required to close down by midnight – a remnant of the military rule – quite a few designated as ‘tourist’ stay open till later.
As a tribute to the country’s quaint hospitality, many coffee shops and tabangs send their waitresses down to your workplace or home who will sit and chat with you while you finish your beverage. You could also go out dancing at one of the many ‘rock cafes’ the country is renowned for.
These cafes are also cheaper than the regular nightclubs and, according to many tourists, more fun.Eating out is strongly recommended at the pochangmachs or outdoor stalls (usually mobile) which usually open around dusk and offer the most palatable fare on earth. Great views, great outdoors, and great food… what are you waiting for? Seoul beckons.
